MEDIA ADVISORY: Mines Advisory Group America and the American Task Force for Lebanon Focus on Unexpl

June 22, 2015 (Washington, DC) -- The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) America and the American Task Force for Lebanon (ATFL) will host Bekim Shala, Country Director, MAG in an open forum to discuss the forgotten issue of landmine and unexploded ordnance contamination in Lebanon and the compounding effects of the Syrian refugee crisis on this issue.

Lebanon is still contaminated with landmines, cluster munitions, and explosive remnants of war despite years of effort by Lebanon and the international community to rid Lebanon of these destructive weapons.

The Lebanon Mine Action Center strategic mine action plan for 2011-2020 is to clear all cluster munition remnants by 2016 and for completion of landmine clearance, except for the Blue Line, by 2020.

Unfortunately, funding shortfalls have raised concerns over the lack of capacity to rid the country of these lethal instruments of war by these dates. Mr. Shala will discuss what steps can be taken to mitigate these issues and move closer to the planning goals.

When: Thursday, June 25, 2015

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Where: 1776 K Street, NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC

RSVP requested at maglebanontalk.eventbrite.com.
