ATFL Urges US to Resettle More Than 10,000 Syrian Refugees and Expedite Vetting

The American Task Force for Lebanon urges the Administration to resettle more than 10,000 Syrian refugees in the United States over the coming fiscal year and we urge expedited screening of the refugees, given the urgency of the situation.

Since the US is asking for countries to share the burden of the Syrian refugees, the US should set an example by resettling a portion of them. We fully agree with what a high US official told us: the US cannot resettle itself out of the Syrian refugee crisis. The solution is for the United Nations Security Council to expeditiously work for a political settlement in Syria, to stem the outflow of Syrians and allow the refugees to go home. The Administration’s increase of the refugee quota by 10,000 in fiscal year 2016 and by 30,000 in fiscal year 2017 should be clarified: not only Syrian refugees will be included and these refugees will be accepted for processing in 2016 and 2017, not resettled. It will take closer to 24 months for the United States to do the security and health vetting of the refugees. The only way to expedite vetting is to hire additional Department of Homeland Security personnel and we urge Congress to appropriate funding for this.
